Genetic Evaluation
Genetic evaluation is an important tool in breeding work and selection of cattle. Currently, the majority of countries use the Animal Model as the standard method of genetic evaluation for estimating breeding values for milk production traits. In Slovakia, we use the TEST DAY MODEL (TDM), which represents a further stage of development in the estimation of breeding values using animal models. This new approach to estimating breeding values is based on individual monthly recordings rather than on 305-day or standardised lactations. Since 2004, second and third lactations have also been included in the calculation of breeding values.
